As caregivers, it is natural to want to help. When you see someone you love struggling, your first instinct may be to step in, solve the problem, or make things easier.
That instinct comes from love.
But sometimes, the greatest support isn't doing something for someone, it's creating the space for them to do it themselves. Growth often happens in the pause. In the extra minute it takes to zip a jacket. In the time spent searching for the right words. In the opportunity to make a choice, even if it isn't the one you would have made.

Supporting without taking over doesn't mean withholding help. It means noticing the difference between assistance that empowers and assistance that replaces.
Sometimes a gentle prompt, a reassuring smile, or simply waiting a little longer is exactly the support someone needs.
Progress may look slower this way, but confidence grows through experience, not through having every obstacle removed. What if independence isn't measured by doing everything alone, but by having someone beside you who believes you're capable?
Take a moment to reflect: Is there one task today where you could offer guidance instead of taking over?
Small moments like these build confidence, strengthen trust, and remind the people we support that they are capable, valued, and deserving of the opportunity to grow at their own pace.
